‘Hamlet,’ a William Shakespearean play set in the 1400s, is turned into a contemporary interpretation of the 21st century into a complete theatre set. The play’s original plot to a modern setting goes with the history of Bay 20, Carraigeworks being a former industrial site, highlighting the concept of ‘old vs. new.’
Through an iterative design process including drawings, models, visual storyboard, and technical plans, set the play in a corporate world after extracting critical emotions from the play of entrapment, misery and claustrophobia. We have chosen a round carousel-like shape for the set design shown in the video to communicate feelings of entrapment and an ongoing “spinning” of each scene unfolding in a melodramatic way.
The final intent of the theatre set is to work with shadow, light, and transparency to create spaces that amplify the thirst for power but is marred by deceit, betrayal, and turmoil. Creating a space that feels as if the characters are imprisoned in a nightmare, mirroring reality and a seemingly inescapable world.
